Soul City Digital dazzle with slick Bill Withers cover

Soul City Digital has continued its neverending run of exceptional releases with a great cover of Bill Withers' classic 'Ain't No Sunshine'. The release - billed as a collaboration between two of Audio Jacker's most prolific aliases (The Backup Plan and Changin Fazes) - dropped via streaming services & Traxsource on 10th May, with a wider release coming this Friday on all major platforms.

For a moment ignoring the strength of such a catchy topline, it's worth taking a moment to acknowledge what Martin Thomas Mellon has achieved over the last 15 or 16 years with his brilliant production skills. Maintaining a high enough workrate to pad out an entire label's worth of artist aliases in itself is worthy of note; but when you also take into account the level at which this guy has been operating, it's a simply unprecedented run which one could argue is worthy of way more praise that its gotten thus far.

The Audio Jacker releases sit firmly within the House music bracket, but - for the purposes of this website (which is primarily concerned with Garage) - the tracks recorded under other aliases, such as those noted above, shuffle a little more & have consistently been worthy of attention. It's why MJ Cole has been sharing them on his Discord channel, & how Martin's 'Changin Fazes' ended up with an In The Garage award for Breakthrough Producer in 2021. It makes you wonder exactly what he could have achieved in the music industry at a time when being a social media personality mattered less, & musical ability was of greater significance.

This latest release continues his trend of excellence & it goes without saying that if you enjoy your NUKG on the Housier & more musical tip, you need to scope it out at once! It's a fine blend of skippy 4x4 beats, M1 organ bass, smooth Rhodes licks & sidechained synth strings - which perfectly bring an OG soul classic bang up-to-date for 2024 in style.
