Here at NUKG 24/7 we're big fans of Green Deep's creative & well-executed production. Regular visitors to the site will note that we sang the praises of recent releases 'Pretty Green Eyes' & 'It Goes Like' &, although he's definitely switched things up stylistically on this latest release, we're equally as excited for it.
It's been some time since Downplay dropped new music - over a year in fact. Last responsible for the 'Future Vintage' double-drop, the label has established itself as a force to be reckoned with since its inception in 2018: becoming home to music from the likes of Kobe JT, Royal Flush, Kells, BWK Project, Phonetix, Deadly Habitz & Fork and Knife - amongst others. Changes in personal circumstance followed by a transition of ownership meant a significant period of downtime for the imprint, but since its acquisition by NUKG 24/7 earlier this year, plans have been in motion to re-establish the brand... & we can't think of a better way to do it than with Green Deep's 2-track 'Turkish Delight' release.
The track itself 'Turkish Delight' harps back to a post-UKG heyday lull when the scene began to regress underground, laying the foundations for what later came to be known as Grime. During this period, acts like Musical Mobb, Jon E Cash, & Alias led the way with gritty, bass-heavy "Sublow" "8-Bar" productions. The latter act is clearly a big inspiration from Green Deep's sound on 'Turkish Delight' - which features hard-hitting beats & an insanely catchy riff played on the Oud, which'll worm its way into your head without doubt.
Also featured on the release is a dutty 2 Step roller by the name of 'Gunslinger'. Fans of late 80s Nintendo games might sense a vibe of nostalgia about it but - regardless of whether you recognise that - it's hard to overlook the well thought-out combination of beats & bass, which seem destined to rock many a big system.
You can support 'Turkish Delight' right now here. Welcome back Downplay; & kudos to Mr Green!
